Cyrilla Verkooijen about her work:
“Landscapes, nature, and natural elements often provide the basis for my figurative and also my abstract work. I frequently use fragile materials, which are related to the landscape and the environment in which the work is displayed. The applied materials are arranged between wall, ceiling and floor.
I believe that, it isn’t me but the material that determines the scene. The fragile, dynamic and unpredictable material creates my actions and seems to want to take control over my work. Coincidence, motion and process allows me to be part of the work or its occurrence. Attracted to the minimalistic Dutch water landscape I already translated the typical characteristics such as level differences, the special light, the gray skies, the perspective fields and the flat horizon into a contemporary image.
I regard landscapes often as a kind of stage piece for densely populated residential areas. In some installations of mine this theme ‘the landscape as a stage piece’ is made visible as an integral part of the work”.
Cyrilla was nominated for the Buning Brongers Prices 2014
